LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Although Indiana Gov. Mike Pence may be a familiar face to us, Tuesday night was a chance for the nation to get to know him better.

But first, let's travel back to where Pence got his start.

Twenty years ago, Gov. Pence was hosted his own radio and TV show based out of Indianapolis. He dubbed himself " the minor-league Rush Limbaugh."

WDRB's Karl Man talked with former Indiana University professor Leslie Lenkowsky over Skype, who says he's a pro on Pence's path

The former professor worked alongside, and at times was in competition with, Gov. Pence for the better part of two decades. Lenkowsky recalls the time when Pence almost called it quits.

"Losing twice in a bid to be a member of congress, in fact after the second loss he did a lot of soul searching," Lenkowsky said.

To get the other side of things WDRB, met up with supporters of the Clinton/Kaine ticket at a local VP debate watch party. We wanted  to see if they had the tiniest shred of local excitement for Pence, even though he represents the opposition.

"There's no regional pride in Mike Pence," one Clinton supporter said.

"Not someone who is going to represent my views," echoed another.

For critics and supporters, the fact remains that we are a little more than a month away from election day,  a day that could put Pence a heartbeat away from the presidency.

But first, experts believe Trump and Pence need to bridge the gap of where they come from and who they stand for

"Mike Pence really embodies the values of kind of small-and medium-sized towns in Indiana, that is not where Donald Trump is from, to put it mildly," Lenkowsky said.
