Simmons College announces new partnership, initiatives geared toward eliminating poverty

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Simmons College is spearheading several new initiatives aimed at empowering the community and alleviating poverty.

During Wednesday's West Louisville Forum, leaders of the group "Empower West Louisville" announced that Louisville will soon be hosting three summits. Those summits will focus primarily on gathering the faith community, Christian education, and alleviating poverty among blacks and whites.

The summits are set for 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Also on Wednesday, Simmons President Kevin Cosby announced a partnership with the National Baptist Convention of America (NBCA). Leaders of NBCA say the group, which has 3.5 million members, will move its headquarters to Louisville.

After leaving town 105 years ago, NBCA officials say they're proud to announce their return.

"Our excitement and enthusiasm on moving to Louisville knows no bounds," said NBCA President Rev. Sam Tolbert. "In a sense, this is not a relocation to Louisville, but a return to Louisville."

That convention is set to take place at the Galt House in September of 2017.
