Vine Grove finishes construction on $900,000 storm shelter

VINE GROVE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city of Vine Grove has a brand new storm shelter, thanks to grant from FEMA.

The storm shelter is built into the hill right next to the Vine Grove Fire Department.

“We finally got it, and its been right at a year on construction,” said fire chief Steven New.

The city applied for the grant six years ago and received it based upon how many people were living within three-quarters of a mile of the shelter.

“If we know people don't have basements or live in trailer homes or older homes that don't have shelter, that's what this is designed for,” Chief New said.

The facility is around 3,000 square feet and can hold up to 485 people at any given time. It has men’s and women’s restrooms, air conditioning and heat and is generator powered.

“The walls are 14 inches thick ... Rebar-reinforced concrete,” Chief New said. “We could actually park every fire truck we have on top of this, and it wouldn't bother this roof at all.”

The total cost of the building was nearly $900,000. The FEMA grant paid for 75 percent, the state paid for 12 percent and city of Vine Grove paid for the final 13 percent (around $100,000).

“Right now, we try and tell them to go to a neighbor’s house or the interior rooms of the house,” Chief New said.

Now that won’t be necessary. Chief New said during storms in the spring, people were looking for places to go.

“I was thinking we had 20 or more people actually come to our fire station,” he said. “Looking for shelter early in the spring.”

The shelter will open any time there is a tornado watch.
