Harrods Creek first responders say they lack manpower to handle serious crashes on East End bridge

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Harrods Creek's Fire Chief says he'll lose 15 firefighters and a fire truck when construction on the bridge is finished at the end of the year.

That's because the Indiana Department of Transportation has been paying for extra crew and equipment to protect construction workers.
Both the chief and the fire marshal are concerned they won't have manpower or the tools to save victims if a serious accident happens on the bridge or in the East End tunnel.

"We currently have the people on staff, they're trained to that level of expertise and if we can't locate the funding to keep that going then as soon as this project is open to the public, that level of service will go away," said Harrods Creek Fire Marshal Steven Hanson.

Coming up tonight at 6 and 11, WDRB's Stephan Johnson explains the possible solution that would cost only pennies, and why it hasn't happened yet.
