BOZICH & CRAWFORD | Football Forecast for Kentucky, Indiana & Louisville

Kentucky's path to six victories goes through Vanderbilt. Kentucky's path to six victories goes through Vanderbilt.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Do you believe in the Jeff Sagarin ratings?

If you are Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops, you should because Sagarin’s computer power rankings have Kentucky favored to handle Vanderbilt at Commonwealth Stadium Saturday afternoon?

Do you believe in miracles?

Al Michaels would not be the only one to utter those words if Indiana somehow managed to take down second-ranked Ohio State Saturday afternoon in Columbus. The Hoosiers are underdogs by four touchdowns.

Do you believe in looking ahead?

If you’re the University of Louisville football team, that’s the option this weekend.

No game. So you can focus on A) Duke, next Friday’s opponent when the Blue Devils host Army Saturday afternoon or B) Washington, one of the ranked teams the Cardinals need to stumble, when the Huskies try to end their 12-game losing streak against Oregon.

I’d suggest the latter, especially with the unbeaten Huskies play at 7:30 p.m. on WDRB Saturday. Washington is favored by 9, an indicator of how dramatically Oregon has slipped.

Back to the local previews.

Vanderbilt at Kentucky

The Story Line: The path to bowl eligibility for Kentucky is clear:

Win the next three against Vandy, Mississippi State and Missouri and then pummel Austin Peay. Can’t take steps two, three and four without completing step one against a Vandy team that lost to the South Carolina team Kentucky defeated.

The Question: Kentucky improved from 14th to 12th in rushing defense. Can the Wildcats continue that trend against a Vanderbilt team that averages only 147 yards per game rushing? Good question and good matchup for UK.

The Crazy Stat: Vanderbilt is trying for its fifth win in six games against the Wildcats. The last time the Commodores won five of six against Kentucky was 1991-96. Can’t lose to Vandy in Year Four of your coaching tenure.

The Coverage: 4 p.m., SEC Network, Dave Neal, Matt Stinchcomb, Olivia Harlan. Katie George, Rick Bozich for WDRB.

The Line: Wildcats by 3.

The Picks: Eric Crawford — Kentucky 27-17; Rick Bozich — UK 17-16.

Indiana at Ohio State

The Story Line: The Buckeyes, my pick to win the national title, are averaging 57 points per game, more than everybody but Texas Tech and Louisville. Indiana’s defense has improved under Tom Allen, but can the Hoosiers hold Ohio State under 30? Or even 40?

The Question: What’s happened to IU’s running game? They’ve scored only two rushing TDs in four games and failed to rush for more than 156 yards the last two games.

The Crazy Stat: The Hoosiers won back-to-back games against the Buckeyes in 1987 and 1988 — their only two wins against Ohio State since 1951.

The Coverage: 3:30 p.m., ESPN, Bob Wischusen, Brock Huard, Allison Williams.

The Line: Buckeyes by 29.

The Picks: Crawford Ohio State 53-14; Bozich OSU — 45-10.

Other games: Western Kentucky at Louisiana Tech: Crawford, La Tech 38-35; Bozich, La Tech 27-24; Oklahoma vs. Texas: Crawford, OU 31-28; Bozich, OU, 35-24; Florida State at Miami: Crawford, Miami 35-31; Bozich, Miami, 30-24.

Season record: Crawford 20-5; Bozich 18-7.
