LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville-based acapella group Linkin' Bridge, along with comedian Tom Mabe, were dishing out more than just great tunes and funny jokes Friday morning.

The local celebrities were on-hand to distribute "Blessings in a Backpack" bags to students at Engelhard Elementary. The event took place from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

Blessings in a Backpack provides food on weekends for elementary school children who might otherwise go hungry.

"We are here because these kids need food," said Linkin Bridge singer Ekoe Alexanda. "I am so grateful and I'm glad that there is a program like this out for them because what would they do otherwise?"

Alexanda said it means a lot for the group to give back to their community.

"This is better than TV because it's actually a difference -- a physical difference -- as opposed to an emotional one, actually being able to give them something," he said. "How can a child learn if he or she is hungry?"

Both Linkin' Bridge and Mabe will repeat the event at Zachary Taylor Elementary next Friday, Oct. 14, at the same time.

Musical group Linkin' Bridge advanced to the Top 10 of "America's Got Talent," and Mabe is known for his "Mabe in America" comedy shows.

The two are scheduled to hold a Dec. 8 concert at the Kentucky Center for the Arts to benefit Blessings in a Backpack and 100 Black Men of Louisville, Inc.
