JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Jeffersonville couple lost their life savings to a pair of thieves.

It started when two strangers offered to fix their driveway Wednesday for $20. The homeowner thought it sounded too good to be true.

Turns out, it was.

"They noticed my driveway was in bad shape, and they said, we'll fix this hole out here and patch your driveway up for $20," William Snelling said.

William Snelling said he was skeptical from the start.

"I said, well, you can't do that for $20. And he said, 'oh, yes we can!'"

But, the two men wanted the money upfront.

"I said, no, I'm not giving you no $20," William Snelling said. "When you get started on this driveway ... I'll give you $20."

William Snelling said the men talked a good game and even sweet-talked his wife.

"They was telling her how pretty she is and all this crap, sucking her in."

Jane Snelling said when she went to get money from a can they keep in their bedroom, one of the men followed.

"He walked in here right behind me," she said. "Like a dumb butt, I should have stopped right there, but I just went right on back to where the money was in our bedroom."

William Snelling stood his ground, and the men left when he refused to make a deal on the driveway.

But the couple quickly realized they had been scammed out of much more than $20.

The Snellings say the men took $17,000.

"They looked so innocent, clean cut," Jane Snelling said.

The couple said the suspects are white men in their late 20s or early 30s, driving a beige Chevy Silverado with Illinois tags.

"I'm sick Wednesday, and I've been sick since. Now I am scared to answer the door," William Snelling said.

Right now, Jeffersonville Police are investigating the case and looking for the suspects. If you have any information about these two men, you can call the police department.
