MILLTOWN, Ind. (WDRB) -- Described by family friends as a “good kid,” Steven Broughton is now charged with murder.

The 24-year-old is accused of killing his 41-year-old stepfather, Larry McDonnell by beating him in the head with a baseball bat.

On Saturday night, deputies with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department were called to a home on Church Street in Milltown.

"The subject on the line reported that he needed an ambulance and police because someone had been hit with a baseball bat,” said Crawford County Sheriff Charlie McDaniel.

The sheriff says the caller was Broughton.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found McDonnell dead from blunt force trauma to the head.

"[Broughton] was basically waiting on the police to get there and was very cooperative and very matter of fact in describing what had happened at the residence,” McDaniel said.

According to the sheriff, Broughton claimed his stepfather had a history of domestic violence and verbal abuse aimed at Broughton’s mother and two children who lived in the home.

“Mr. Broughton said that it had just been an ongoing thing and it had been building, and it apparently reached a climax,” McDaniel said.

Sheriff McDaniel says his office presented the information to the prosecutor and it was determined that a murder charge would be filed against Broughton.

"For someone who has never been in any trouble, I think this is a little much,” said longtime family friend, Mindi Spurling. “I think he should be charged with something, but murder? I think it’s more defense.”

Sheriff McDaniel says murders in Crawford County are incredibly rare.

"We count how many years between murders instead of how many murders per year,” McDaniel said.

The sheriff says it’s possible that in the future the murder charge against Broughton could be amended to a lesser charge.
