Shelbyville, Ky. man dies after being beaten inside Las Vegas jail

SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- During his short stay in a Las Vegas jail, Jeremiah Bowling sent several letters to his mother back in Shelbyville.

“He said, ‘I love you mom. No matter what happens, God’s got this’,” Bowling’s mother Patricia Fitzpatrick recalled of the letters. “He said, ‘I’ve gotten close to Jesus in here’ and this was the last letter.”

The 25-year-old had spent his entire life living in central Kentucky, but his mother says in August he chose to head out west.

“He wanted a change. That’s what he said,” Fitzpatrick said. “I begged him not to go to Vegas. I didn’t think it was a good choice.”

From there, Fitzpatrick admits the son she called “Jeremy” and “Miah” stole a car to try to get back to Kentucky.

Bowling pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted grand larceny and he was incarcerated in the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On Saturday, Las Vegas Police say Bowling was beaten and strangled by his cellmate, Franklin Sharp during an apparent fight.

A corrections officer found Bowling bleeding from his head in his cell. Doctors later pronounced him dead at a hospital, police said.

Sharp -- who was already jailed on charges of attempted grand larceny and attempted burglary -- was charged with murder for Bowling’s death.

“How? How could it happen? Where’s the staff? Where’s the security?” Fitzpatrick said.

“I just don’t see how this happened. I don’t see it at all. They’re in the wrong. They should’ve protected my little brother,” said Bowling’s sister Janie Ware.

The family’s next obstacle is getting Bowling’s body back to the Bluegrass.

To do that, Fitzpatrick started a GoFundMe page. She hopes to raise the nearly $3,700 she says is needed to get the body out of Vegas and buried in Shelbyville.
