Indianapolis Archbishop to be appointed a Cardinal

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A move by Pope Francis is helping the Indianapolis Archbishop make history.

The pope is appointing Joseph Tobin as a Cardinal next month. Pope Francis named Tobin as one of the 17 new Cardinals, only three of whom are American.

This will make for the first sitting Cardinal in the archdiocese's history.

Tobin was named Archbishop of Indianapolis in 2012. Experts say the promotion reflects Francis' concern for refugees.

Tobin has openly opposed Gov. Mike Pence's stance against allowing Syrian refugees to settle in Indiana.
