LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The coroner has released the name of the man who was killed in a crash on Interstate 64 Monday night.

According to Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Eddie Robinson, 29-year-old Derrick Carter was pronounced dead at the scene just after 11 p.m.

Police say Carter was driving a rented SUV in the westbound lanes of I-64 near the I-264 interchange when he did not notice that traffic had stopped and slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer. Robinson says he was ejected from the vehicle and died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Carter's girlfriend, a passenger in the SUV, says they were homeless and on their way back to Omaha, Nebraska.

Carter's family has been notified.
