'Double crossover diamond' interchange coming to Bullitt County

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Big changes are on the way for the I-65 interchange at the KY-480 exit.

In September, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials decided that a “double crossover diamond” would be the best course of action to take at the interchange that often sees wrecks and heavy traffic.

Transportation officials say it will create a “more balanced improvement to the KY 480 signalized intersections on each side of I-65” and make it safer.

“You can actually move more traffic through with these phased signals than you can where you have left turn lanes,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Andrea Clifford. “There's less conflict points where traffic is turning in front of each other.”

The concept is relatively new, but this will be the second time the Commonwealth of Kentucky has used the idea to alleviate traffic concerns.

In 2011, KYTC completed a double crossover diamond at New Circle Road in Lexington.

“It was a very short-term project considering the magnitude of what we were trying to do,” said KYTC spokesperson for District 7, Natasha Lacy.

KYTC says that project worked like a charm.

“We have increased traffic flow, and we have reduced accidents by 50 percent,” Lacy said.

Meanwhile, frequent drivers of the interchange in Bullitt County say some change is desperately needed.

“There's so many factories back here -- eBay and Amazon. There's only so much traffic that can go on two lanes,” driver Mike Nalley said.

For reference, below is a list of traffic counts at that interchange from 2015:

  • KY 480 between KY 61 and I-65 – average daily traffic (ADT) of 7,607
  • KY 480 between I-65 and KY 1442 (Clarks Lane) – ADT of 7,917

KYTC is still in the design phase of the project and has not released a timeline for construction.
