UPDATE | 59-year-old man dies in Jeffersonville house fire

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Firefighters in Jeffersonville are trying to determine what caused a fire that left one person dead.

The fire started around 8 p.m. Tuesday at a home near 9th and French Streets. Crews got to the scene quickly and found the home engulfed in heavy flames and smoke.

When firefighters arrived, they began searching for a man who neighbors told them might be inside. They eventually found him, but it was too late.

Clark County Coroner Terry Conway released Wednesday that Charles Goldman, 59, died in the fire. His cause of death is not yet being released.

Lee Hancock, who lives nearby, told us he tried to save Goldman before firefighters arrived.

"The front of the house was burning, we ran back to the backside where his car's pulled in and tried to knock his window out and get in, but we couldn't get in anyways." We was too late ... it was burning that bad."

Julie Moran says Goldman was "a nice older gentleman, kept to himself. Everybody tries to look out for each other in the neighborhood and stuff."

Neighbors tell us Goldman lived alone.
