LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man after he shot a 13-year-old girl in the head while handling a gun.

According to an arrest report, 18-year-old Davon Powell was "wantonly handling" a gun just after 1:30 a.m. on Rustic Way, near Rangeland Road, Wednesday, when he fired the gun, shooting the girl -- whom police describe as a relative -- in the head.

Police say Powell then ran away, throwing the gun in nearby bushes.

He was caught on Lodema Way after a short foot chase.

Police say he confessed to shooting the girl -- and said he ran away because he was afraid the gun had been stolen. At the time of his arrest, police say they could not confirm whether or not the gun had been stolen.

Powell was arrested and charged with first degree assault and tampering with physical evidence.

Police say the 13-year-old victim was in "stable condition" as of noon on Wednesday.
