LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Breckinridge County, Ky., say they have a clown problem.

According to Wagner Baskett, chief of Cloverport Police, the department has received three or four separate reports of clowns causing trouble in the city. He says so far, he's gotten reports of three clowns -- a white female and two white males. Basket says they were all wearing "homemade getup costumes," with their faces covered in either white paint, or a white mask.

He says the males are described as being between 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet tall and are usually wearing dark hoodies and dark pants.

All of the reports have been in the area of Weatherholt Apartments and Main Street in Cloverport. Baskett the reports have all come in the past three weeks.

The most recent report was Tuesday night, and involved witnesses who said they saw a clown holding an ax.

"It scared me a little bit. It freaked us out," Tyler Grant said.

"He was just standing on the street corner, supposedly with an ax in his hand, and was flipping them off," Chief Baskett said.

Baskett says witnesses told police the encounter ended when one of them pulled a lawnmower blade out of his truck.

"These guys just laughed at him, and pretty soon, he just ran away."

WDRB News received an image purportedly taken by a witness who says he saw the ax-wielding clown Tuesday night.

Baskett says he believes the clowns that are "terrorizing" the town are likely just pulling a prank.

"They’re trying to scare everybody and stuff, is mainly what they’re doing," he said.

"It's kind of scary, I think. You hear about it everywhere so it's kind of nerve wracking," said a Cloverport resident.

If anyone has any information, they are asked to call Cloverport Police at (270) 788-3751.
