Gathering held to honor fallen firefighters during Fire Prevention Week

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's Fire Prevention Week and firefighters say there are simple ways to avoid deaths and injuries.

Firefighters gathered Tuesday at the Fallen Firefighter Monument in Jefferson Square Park to remember those who have died in the line of duty.

They also hope to prevent more tragedies. Fires and fire deaths have fallen more than 20 percent across the country in the last decade. "While those numbers may seem impressive, they still translate into 1.2 million fires every year, 3,240 fire deaths, 16,000 injuries and $11.5 billion in property loss due to fires," said Louisville Fire Chief Col. Gregory Frederick.

Fire officials say you should have smoke alarms, test them each month and replace them every ten years.

You should also have a fire escape plan.
