LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A Top-5 match up with a district championship on the line headlines the high school football schedule this weekend. The No. 3 St. Xavier Tigers travel to No. 2 Male High School on Friday night for WDRB’s Game of the Week.
As both a St. X player and a coach, Will Wolford has been involved in some big games against Male. He and his team are preparing for another this week.
“We’re trying to keep everything the same, treat it like a normal game, but we know it’s not," Wolford said. "This is the biggest game we’re going to play all year. It’s for the district. It’s going to determine home field in the playoffs. It’s a huge game."
The St. X Tigers last beat Male in 2012. Since then, in four tries the Tigers have come up short. Wolford will try to reverse that trend on Friday night.
“Hopefully we’ve coached them up a little bit better, and we go out there and play hard. We just have to make one more play than they do and so far they’ve done a really good job making that extra play,” Wolford said.
“This game will come down to literally the last play, last possession. This one will be probably no different.”
For the 6-1 Male Bulldogs, they hope that last play doesn’t come down to St. X’s quarterback Des Ridder.
“I know St. X has a great running attack, particularly with the quarterback run," Male head coach Chris Wolfe said. "You don’t see that a whole lot. What I want to see out of the St. X game is how we can handle not only just run defense but run defense against a running quarterback."
“I think that’s a whole different element, where they have that extra guy to account for. I think that’ll really tell the tale on Friday night.”
The Bulldogs host the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
