Big crowds pay to pamper African elephants in French Lick

Posted: Updated:

FRENCH LICK, Ind. (WDRB) – Some massive animals weighing more than 10,000 pounds are attracting curious crowds in southern Indiana.

For years, the most famous face from French Lick was NBA legend Larry Bird. But you can't compare that "bird" to these creatures who also call French Lick home.

The drive to find these docile darlings took WDRB to Wilstem Ranch, where people poured in so they can pay to pamper a heard of African elephants.

For around $60, you get to scrub them down, rinse them off and even paint the elephants toenails.

"She was using her trunk to smell us and to get to know us, it was so neat, it kind of felt like you were shaking her hand," said Courtney Wright, who took part in the encounter.

This year an estimated 65,000 people have come to the ranch to for the experience. However, time is running out to take part in the pampering. At the end of the month the herd heads to Florida for a four-month trip to avoid the winter.

If you miss out now, you will just have to wait until spring 2017 to see the massive feet stomp across southern Indiana.
