LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Following what Head Coach Jeff Brohm called their worst outing in a couple of seasons, the WKU defense faces another tough test against old rival Middle Tennessee State Saturday in Murfreesboro.
Western fell 55-52 at Louisiana Tech last Thursday, ending its 13-game Conference USA win streak. The Toppers gave up 561 yards in the defeat.
"It was a tough loss for us but a lot of things we can learn from it," said Brohm. "A lot of corrections to be made and that’s what we have to do. We have to make sure we use these defeats to allow our anger to motivate us to not want to ever lose again. And I think that’s part of trying to win, you have to really hate losing, it has to bother you and make you upset. We have to find a way to fix things, but our guys to this point understand that. We have a lot of work to do this week and another good opponent on the road, which will be tough like it always is. We have to find a way to improve and keep the game close and find a way to win in the fourth quarter.”
The Hilltoppers will face another strong offense in Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders are averaging 528 yards and 37 points-a-game.
“They have very similar concepts (to Louisiana Tech) and hopeful there is some carry over with our preparation,” Defensive Coordinator Nick Holt said. “I don’t know how much it will really matter, though. We just have to do what we’re supposed to do. If we take care of business and keep the ball in front of us, we’ll be okay. We just can’t give up those easy scores. It’s unacceptable.”
WKU (3-3,1-1) and Middle Tennessee (4-1, 2-0) have met 65 times with four of the last five games being decided by a total of 12 points. Western Kentucky lost a triple overtime game in Murfreesboro two years ago, 50-47, then blew out the Blue Raiders 58-28 last season in Bowling Green. They are trying to beat MTSU in back-to-back years for the first time since winning three straight from 1978-1980.
Kickoff is 2:30 pm Eastern.
