Costume stores weigh in after Target pulls clown masks from stores

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A nationwide craze of clowns wreaking havoc is what led Target to remove some clown masks from its stores across the country.

On Monday, Target released the following statement:

“Given the current environment, we have made the decision to remove a variety of clown masks from our assortment, both in stores and online.”

Since early last month, social media has been dominated by pictures and videos of clown sightings in several states, including Kentucky. In some cases, the people dressed as clowns are holding a weapon.

Recently, there have been reports of clowns involved in gas station and restaurant robberies.

Tracy Caufield, the owner of Caufield’s Novelty in Louisville, says clown costumes have always been popular but sales seemed to spike after the first reports in September.

“I think that people thought of it as an internet phenomenon and a fun way to scare people,” Caufield said. “Probably about the first of October, we saw people start to be more cautious… the little boys would come in and say, ‘I want to be a scary clown,’ and their moms would say ‘no, you’re not being that.’”

Caufield says Target’s decision is one that she and other costume shops in the area would likely never even consider.

“It’s something that we supply to a lot of places, so I can’t imagine removing it from the store completely,” Caufield said. “I think that people just have to use common sense and not do anything stupid with it.”

“If Target decides they don’t want to, that’s fine. We’ll take care of the customers who do want a good clown costume,” said Chuck Mattingly, the owner of Horner Novelty in Jeffersonville, Ind.

“A lot of kids still see the fun side of a clown, so if they want to be that, we’re here to help.”
