Lexington Police say fake GoFundMe page created for murdered teen Trinity Gay

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Lexington say a fake GoFundMe page was started for murdered teen Trinity Gay.

Gay was the 15-year-old daughter of Olympic athlete and Lexington native Tyson Gay. She died early Sunday morning after she was shot outside of a restaurant.

Police say the page was being used to "solicit funds for a 'farewell party.'"

Officials say the page had not been created or supported by the family and they asked people not to submit donations.

WKYT reports that the page has since been deactivated.

GoFundMe spokesperson Bobby Whithorne said in released statement: "We take fraud very seriously and have multiple layers of security in place to protect users. The platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means all users are protected by a refund policy. This campaign has been suspended and the donor has been refunded."
