Alleged Indiana serial robber confesses to crimes, explains why he did it

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) – A brazen Indiana man admits to robbing eight banks, three of which were in Jeffersonville.

From covering his face with hats and glasses to shaving the top of his head, Jeffersonville Police say 48-year-old Samuel T. Gregg went to extreme lengths to alter his appearance when robbing the banks.

Even though the suspect descriptions were so different, how Gregg allegedly robbed the banks tipped police off.

“The way he entered the bank, the way he exited the bank, how he approached the cashier,” said Det. Todd Hollis with Jeffersonville Police.

On Monday, detectives say Gregg robbed the First Savings Bank in Jeffersonville on Court Avenue with a gun and demanded cash with a written note.  A little more than 24 hours later, he was arrested at his Indianapolis home.

“We found the weapon that had been seen in videos,” Det. Hollis said. “We even recovered the note from the latest robbery on Monday as well as an amount of cash that was consistent with the amount of cash that was taken in the robbery.”

Investigators say Gregg confessed to all the robberies that occurred since July of 2015. The first one took place in Indianapolis, then Terre Haute, Jeffersonville, up to Shererville, back to Jeffersonville, down to Farmersburg, then to Farina, Ill., and finally to Jeffersonville yet again.

“We can't connect him to any of the jurisdictions outside Indianapolis,” Det. Hollis said. “I believe he picked those areas specifically because he didn't have a connection to them. That he would not be identified on local media because no one in those areas knew him.”

As to why Gregg committed the crimes, this is what he told police:

“To pay for living expenses for him and his mother who was in bad health,” Det. Hollis said.

Police say Gregg appeared remorseful when being questioned.

Police could not tell us how much money was recovered, because the case is still under investigation.

Gregg is currently charged with the Monday bank robbery. Additional charges from the other seven robberies are pending.
