What makes Kentuckiana unique? Is it the food? What about people or places? Each Thursday on WDRB News at 11 p.m., we'll take a look at the people, places and things that make Kentuckiana special in a weekly series, “Living Local.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- He's worked with some of the biggest names in music.

And years before becoming the front man at Mom's Music, Louisville's legendary music school and store, the self-proclaimed country boy made his mark behind the scenes, a gig that started with a simple phone call while he was working in a factory.

"I went in the office to answer the phone, and they said 'How'd you like to go on the road with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars?'" Marvin Maxwell said.

Right then he launched his nearly 60-year career as a studio drummer with stories as legendary as the artists themselves.

"Those astronauts used to come in whenever we played and just go crazy," Maxwell said.

Once he got off the road, Maxwell opened Mom's Music, where he spends most of his time working on various projects. But more important is his mission to pass his love of music on to the next generation.

"I honestly think that it makes a better person out of you," Maxwell said. "Even me."

And at 71, Maxwell isn't ready for the curtain call just yet.

Mom's Music is, however, up for sale. Maxwell is hoping the next owner will keep the music store and school.
