Southern Indiana stylist gives back with free haircuts for those in need

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana stylist is putting her skills to good use, offering free haircuts to those in need.

Tina Strasser just started the free service after teaming up with Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana. As soon as people get in her chair, Strasser listens to the success stories and to the daily struggles locals face.

For about 90-minutes every Thursday night, Strasser gives free haircuts to those in need at Centenary United Methodist Church in New Albany.

"I look at everyone here like my family now," she said.

Danielle Stokes is a local mother of three and money is tight. Her story is a familiar one across southern Indiana.

The free haircuts for all three kids are a blessing to her budget. Her 8-year-old son was in the chair when she spoke to WDRB.

"He likes it, he looks forward to it," Stokes said. "I think it helps him feel more confident."

Strasser has styled hair for the past two decades, spending time cutting and creating across Kentucky, Indiana and Las Vegas.

But her free haircut sessions remind her why she got into this business. It's that feeling she gets after giving somebody a spruced-up look.

That is a feeling you can't put a price tag on.

"I think a bad hair day can make a bad day, so imagine, if you don't have the money or the way to get a haircut, you just don't feel good."
