Hilton Garden Inn breaks ground next to Mall St. Matthews

Posted: Updated:

The empty plot of land next to Mall St. Matthews was sold for $1.8 million on Sept. 30, and two days later, construction crews broke ground.

"We are building a 150-room Hilton Garden Inn," said Ashley Dunn, Director of Sales at Dunn Hospitality Group Director of Sales.

It will be a five-story hotel and restaurant. The developer is no stranger to the Louisville area. Dunn Hospitality group is the same company that built the new Holiday Inn Express on 8th and Market Streets in downtown Louisville.

"The property opened April 5 of 2016,” Dunn said.

It went up in less than a year and opened just in time for the Kentucky Derby.

Dunn Hospitality credits the growing Louisville tourism industry for its success downtown. Out in Saint Matthews, it will target week day corporate visitors doing business in the east end. Right now, Dunn says there aren't many choices in St. Matthews for those travelers.

“The research in the market has indicated there is a need for a hotel to go up in that area,” Dunn said.

The hotel will create 30 new jobs. The executive director of the St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce says it will help bring in new dollars to be spent locally and generate new local, state and federal tax revenue.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in July of 2017.
