Half of all fatal hit-and-run cases in Louisville since 2014 remain unsolved

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - About half of the fatal hit-and-run cases in Louisville since 2014 remain unsolved.

It remains difficult for people like Mark Russell, who lost his daughter more than a year ago.

"She had three kids and they all miss her," Russell said.

Police say 36-year-old Tracey Stovall was walking with a friend along Alanadale Drive in Valley Station when she was hit.

"I just can't understand why somebody would do this, not even stop or say anything," Russell said.

The case is considered a hit-and-run. Louisville Metro Police say since 2014, about 15 percent of the wrecks in Louisville involved a driver who didn't stick around. During that same time period, officers have investigated 15 fatal hit-and-runs. We're told seven of those cases have been solved, and eight are still open.

"It's heartbreaking to be at these scenes and see the reactions of families," said Sgt. William Patterson from LMPD's traffic unit.

One open case happened in June of 2015. Deniesha Pugh, 19, was hit on Broadway and dragged for blocks. Trey Monroe-Royse, just 15-years-old, was killed in Fairdale late last month. Police have put out descriptions of the suspect's car but no arrests have been made.

"As you get further away from the incident, it's harder and harder to get the proper tips and the right information to help solve that case," Patterson said.

But he says those cases can still be solved if people who know what happened come forward.

"What we'd ask folks is take just a second to think about the information they're gonna give us, if they feel it pertains to the case then absolutely, please send us the information," he said. "It's very vital."

It's vital for police and the loved ones left behind, who are waiting for an arrest to be made.

"That would sure make me and my family rest a lot easier," Russell said.
