Muhammad Ali's permanent grave marker goes up in Cave Hill Cemetery

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The greatest is gone, but there's a new monument honoring Muhammad Ali.

Ali is buried behind at Cave Hill Cemetery, and last week, his permanent headstone arrived as his fans continue to show their love and respect for him at his grave site in unusual ways.

Landscapers are putting the finishing touches on the champ's final resting place, still the biggest attraction at Cave Hill Cemetery.

"My sister is visiting from Germany. And on her long list of things to do was to visit Muhammad Ali's grave," said Sabina Briggs, a big Ali fan.

Briggs and her sister, Monica Glatzner, were impressed with the sights and even the sounds at Cave Hill.

"I took pictures I will show and I'll say, I've been at the grave of Muhammad Ali," Glatzner said.

Right now, Cave Hill is not doing on-camera interviews, but we talked to the head of security shortly after Ali was buried.

"We're having over 800-plus vehicles a day coming into the cemetery," Lee Payne said.

And WDRB News has learned that even though there are fewer visitors these days, the love and respect for the champ is still there.

"I definitely will come back," Briggs said. "Because whenever I have visitors coming from all over, I will definitely take them there."

Since Ali's death, people have left hundreds of mementos, everything from small trinkets to a rocking chair.
