Jeffersonville asks for extension to reduce raw sewage overflow

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- The city of Jeffersonville is asking the federal government for an extension to reduce its raw sewage overflows.

A 2009 agreement gave Jeffersonville until 2025 to comply with the EPA's sewage overflow reduction mandate. Now it wants an additional 10 years to meet the new standards.

The city says due to finances, it can't afford the $44 million needed to fix the problem.

The Jeffersonville sewer department says the extension is the city's only remaining option.
