SLIDESHOW: NICU babies celebrate Halloween with tiny costumes

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- These tiny trick-or-treaters are celebrating their first Halloween in style.

The neonatal intensive care unit at Norton Women's and Kosair Children's Hospital is having a Halloween party on Wednesday night, and the babies are all dressed up for it. The party helps the families feel a sense of normalcy.

Many of the babies have been in the NICU for weeks, instead of at home.

Some are so small, they are wearing outfits made for stuffed animals. "Well, you can't help but melt a little 'cause they're so sweet looking, but they're just adorable, we can't help but want to pick them up and snuggle them," said Jacqueline Neal, a mother of twins.

Her babies were dressed as the Dr. Seuss characters "Thing 1 and Thing 2." Their costumes were handmade by dedicated staff. "We actually had a nurse that made them. She knit them, they are so cute, we couldn't help it," Neal laughed.

The party includes a costume contest for the babies, food, entertainment and crafts for the babies' siblings.

It is supported by the March of Dimes.
