Owner of Mt. Washington donut shop showing signs of improvement after shooting

Posted: Updated:

MT. WASHINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) -- People have been leaving flowers in front of the Donut King in Mt. Washington as the business' owner continues to recover from being shot in the head twice.

Family members say the victim, Simon Yeung, is the type of person who works seven days a week. Police say he had parked his car out back at around 1 a.m. Wednesday when he was shot.

"A lot of our family members miss hearing his voice," said Yeung's son, Jonathan.

He spoke with WDRB News by phone Thursday from University Hospital.

"There was a surgery to remove blood clots in the brain, and it was very successful," he said.

Jonathan Yeung says his father's condition is improving, but he may have lost sight in his right eye permanently. He says the family is also preparing for mood or personality changes, since Yeung's injuries involve his brain.

Investigators are still searching for the shooter and have released this surveillance video.

It shows what police believe is a four-door, light-colored, late-model Ford Focus. They say it was seen in the area around the time the shooting happened. Police say it appears there was nothing taken from the donut shop.

"He always puts others before him," Jonathan Yeung said.

At this point, there's no word on a motive, and Jonathan Yeung says he believes it could be random. Community members have left flowers and messages of support in front of the business' locked doors.

Simon Yeung is left with a long recovery, but his family has hope.

"Today, we asked him to squeeze the nurse's hand, and he was able to do that. We asked him to wiggle his toes, and he was able to do that," Jonathan Yeung said.

"The nurses and staff said it was unbelievable ... that he was able to do the things he did right now."

If you have any information about this shooting, you're asked to call Mt. Washington Police.
