Ballard student fighting terminal cancer receives YMCA Youth Character Award

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Amzie Smith is one of 14 students honored with the Greater Louisville YMCA's Youth Character Award.

Amzie was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer about a year ago. When doctors told her she had months to live, her first goal was to reach her 17th birthday.

The Ballard High School junior reached that milestone earlier this month.

Her story of inspiration and faith has gone viral, reaching thousands of people.

Amzie and the other 13 Youth Character Award recipients will receive $1,500 scholarships.
