Southern Indiana community rallies together to clean up neighborhood

CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana neighborhood rallies together trying to keep their homes from being torn down.

Residents and volunteers hit the streets of the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood Saturday, cleaning up, making repairs and painting.

Charlestown's mayor has called the neighborhood a trouble spot with high crime, and over the years, city plans have been in the works to transform the area.

"They don't like what they see here. They want to wipe these homes out and redevelop it with private development. But there are a lot of homes here that are not blighted and they are not for sale," Christina Walsh said.

The president of the Pleasant Ridge Neighborhood Association said the clean-up was part of weeks of renewed efforts to improve the look of the homes and the neighborhood.
