Construction along Frankfort Avenue causes intersection closures

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Major intersection work is happening this week in the St. Matthews and the Crescent Hill area.

CSX is replacing railroad ties and rebuilding crossings at a number of streets.

“The ties have been sitting out there for some time waiting to be used, and then they told us they were going to start on Halloween,” said Louisville Metro Councilman (D-9) Bill Hollander.

The work started on Monday at Galt Avenue and Birchwood Avenue at Frankfort Avenue. According to Hollander, the goal is to only keep each intersection closed for 24 to 48 hours.

“It will help if people have a little patience and understand ways they can get around it without being backed up in traffic,” Hollander said.

Even though multiple crossings will be closed at a time, they are designed so no sections of the area will be closed off entirely.

“For example, Hite will always be open in Crescent Hill, they (CSX) don't plan on closing that,” Hollander said.

CSX calls it “routine maintenance” due to the previous railroad ties deteriorating.

Some people were taking advantage of the opportunity to watch the work being done.

“I think it can be frustrating in and out, but he really, really likes it, so it works for us,” said Taylor Reynolds who took her son Luke to watch to work.

“If you plan, you can work your way around this,” Hollander said.
