Bardstown Police think 'doorbell camera' could stop front step theft

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Halloween is over. Trick or treating is done.

And police say the only people with interest in your doorstep these days are the people dropping off your packages ... and those that are taking them.

Package snatchers have been a problem for years. Bardstown Police say they don't have to be any more, thanks to "Ring," a doorbell camera.

"This is a really simple camera for any home owner or business owner to put up and monitor who's at your door," said Bardstown Police Capt. McKenzie Mattingly.

"Ring" is connected to your cell phone.

"If it detects motions right now, this app will alert me on my phone, and I can look and see who's at my backdoor anywhere and any time," Capt. Mattingly said.

He believes it's going to either deter criminals or help to give police the info they need to lock someone up.

"The officers would be able to go there and view the video footage that they have. It would be a great tool for us to help solve crime," Capt. Mattingly said.

He believes in it so much, he has one of his own.

"It does give me a sense of security," he said.

It's an extra piece of security during a time of year when criminals are looking to take it and anything else they can get their hands on.
