The largest food bank in the area is taking a major hit in donations. Dare to Care may have to chop 1 million meals out of its budget next year. The food bank’s biggest donor, Yum! Brands, says it’s cutting its annual donation of $1 million in half next year.
The Executive Director of Dare to Care, Brian Riendeau, says there has never been more of a need for food assistance in our area than right now. He hopes other members of the community will be able to help make up the $500,000 difference in donations next year.
“Yum! Brand's support has allowed us to triple the number of kid’s cafe meals we serve," Riendeau said. "It's allowed us to increase the amount of fresh produce we distribute. In fact, because of Yum! Brand's support, we were able to distribute over 7 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables across the community."
A Yum! Brands spokesperson released a statement Wednesday afternoon:
“The Yum! Brands Foundation will continue to support Dare to Care Food Bank's local hunger relief efforts, donating approximately $500K in 2017. Yum! and our employees will continue to support the organization after this time however, we're assessing our level of financial contribution. While our philanthropic contributions in Louisville will become more focused and decrease in line with our transformation strategy and the priorities of our three global brands, we're committed to Louisville and the Company and our employees will continue to give back and support the local community.”
YUM! Brands has been supporting the food bank for the last 14 years and will still remain the largest Dare to Care contributor.
