Almost five months after his death, Muhammad Ali has a completed resting place

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The finishing touches have been placed on Muhammad Ali's final resting place, and the public is invited to visit anytime.

A space filled with color and flowers -- that was Muhammad Ali's wish for his final resting place.

Family members tell us Ali wanted to make sure people had a place to sit and reflect, so there are two granite benches are right beside his grave.

Ali's older brother, Rahaman, visited the site on Thursday. He tells WDRB he visits often to sit with his younger brother, known to the rest of the world knows as "The Champ."

It's so wonderful," Rahaman said. "He was a happy-go-lucky person, the flowers are a tribute to his personality, he was a happy person."

In addition to the benches, a large granite monument and stone slab mark the spot where Ali is buried.

A family spokesperson says all of the materials used for the gravesite were custom built in Africa and shipped over, and that's why the design took a few months to finalize.

The site was purchased by the Ali family back in 2008, but now that it's done, fans from all around the world are invited to come here, to Ali's hometown to sit in tranquility with the Champ.

"This is a great honor for his legacy to be here in Louisville, Kentucky, to be here at Cave Hill which he chose as his final resting place," said Donald Lassere, President and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center.

Ali's wife, Lonnie, released this statement: "I wanted the gravesite to reflect things that Muhammad would have liked, not only as his final resting but a place that was welcoming to the many fans he continues to have around the world."

Officials say other family members, including Lonnie, will also be buried at Cave Hill.
