3 Fairdale High students seriously injured in accident on way home from school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four Fairdale High students were injured -- three of them seriously -- after the car they were riding in struck a tree on their way home from school on Thursday.

Dwight Mitchell, a spokesman for the Louisville Metro Police Department, says the accident happened around 2:45 p.m. in the 10300 block of Fox Avenue.

"Our preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of the vehicle lost control, ran off the roadway and struck a tree," Mitchell said. "Two passengers from the vehicle were ejected. The driver of the vehicle was trapped inside."

Mitchell said the driver and two passengers received life-threatening injuries and were transported to University Hospital, while a third passenger received minor injuries and was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital.

"It appears speed was a factor in the collision," Mitchell said. "The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating."

Allison Martin, a spokeswoman for Jefferson County Public Schools, confirmed that the four students were involved in the accident on their way home from school, which dismissed for the day at 2:20 p.m.

The accident occurred about 1.3 miles from the high school.

Classmates said two of the teenagers -- Nathan Aranda and Mohamed Irbrahim -- were on the school's soccer team. Both Nathan and Mohamed, who friends call "Shabang," are in the intensive care unit at University Hospital.

Soccer teammate Faysal Jilanai said it's been a rough day at school.

"Last night I couldn't sleep, but today I see everybody else crying, and I'm just trying to keep everybody else's head up," Jilanai said. "They're good people. I never saw this type of thing coming ... It's just been, I don't know, just overwhelming."
