Alert issued in Scott County after report of sewing needles found in Halloween candy

Posted: Updated:

SCOTT COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana mother has reported finding two sewing needles in Halloween candy collected Monday night during trick-or-treating.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy began investigating after that woman reported the incident on Friday. When the deputy spoke with the complainant, she advised she discovered a “Dum Dums” lollipop with a sewing needle stuck within the wrapper.

She also reported a second sewing needle was found within other Halloween candy collected the same night.

The complainant told investigators that she and her children went trick-or-treating in the Scottsburg Square and "a few other locations.”

No other similar reports were taken by the sheriff’s office, Scottsburg Police, or Austin Police.

“People here are so friendly. It’s a quiet area to live in and it’s just so shocking that I’ve even heard this is going on,” said Rob Walden, a Scottsburg parent.

The sheriff’s office is asking parents to inspect all Halloween candy for any “foreign objects.”

Any findings should be reported to the sheriff’s office tipline at (812) 752-7898.
