Police say man dies after being shot by deputy in Butler County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say a man is dead after he was shot by a Butler County deputy.

The man who was killed was 43-year-old Randy Clark, Jr. of Bowling Green, according to police.

According to a news release from Kentucky State Police, authorities were informed Sunday around 2:15 a.m. that a deputy in Butler County had been involved in a shooting. Officials say the shooting happened after the officer was dragged by a vehicle on Logansport Road, near the intersection of Dave Gaskey Lane in Morgantown.

Officials say a preliminary investigation revealed that a deputy with the Butler County Sheriff's Department made a traffic stop on a 2010 Ford Explorer on Logansport Road. It was believed the occupants of the Explorer had outstanding warrants, according to officials.

Police say as the deputy was trying to positively identify a passenger in the vehicle, Clark "became combative and involved in a physical altercation" with the deputy.

Authorities say the deputy "deployed his taser" and Clark allegedly continued to fight and got into the driver's side of the vehicle and accelerated. As a result, the deputy was dragged by the vehicle, according to police.

Police say the deputy then fired "multiple shots" from his weapon, hitting Clark "multiple times."

Officials say the vehicle continued a short distance before stopping and hitting a guardrail at the intersection of Logansport Road and Dave Gaskey Lane, and the deputy was able to become free from the vehicle.

Investigators say Clark was pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner's Office. Police say Clark was wanted for outstanding warrants in Warren County.

The deputy was taken to a medical center in Bowling Green by Butler County EMS to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
