Indiana fire chief dies in line-of-duty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Indiana fire chief has died in the line of duty, according to Supporting Heroes.

Chief Michael Payne, 58, of the Brookston Prairie Township Volunteer Fire Department died early Tuesday. Officials say he collapsed "from an apparent heart attack."

Supporting Heroes says Chief Payne, along with other members of his department, responded to a truck fire along I-65 north of Lafayette shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Officials say after the fire was put out, Chief Payne collapsed. Efforts to resuscitate Chief Payne were initiated and he was transported to Indiana University Hospital - Lafayette, where he died around 1:45 a.m.

Authorities say he served with the department for over 25 years.
