LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A neighborhood has gained new access to the Ohio River.

City leaders opened a new boat ramp in the Portland neighborhood Wednesday. The new ramp will be open to kayakers and canoers. It will also be used by the Louisville Fire Department's emergency watercraft.

"It's been longtime goal of mine and dream of many residents to open up the river once again to recreational use and enjoyment of West Louisville residents," said Louisville Metro Councilwoman Cheri Hamilton.

The ramp also provides neighbors with an easier walk down to the river's edge.
