Oldham County Schools adding cameras to buses

CRESTWOOD, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some school buses in Oldham County have a new tool to try and stop drivers from passing illegally.

Oldham County Public Schools have installed cameras on several of it’s buses to help track license plates of drivers that pass them while the bus stop sign is deployed.

“What we've done in the past is when a car illegally passes a school bus, the driver will write a report and turn it over to us,” said Oldham County schools spokesperson Lori McDowell.

However, bus drivers only did that when they were able to see the license plate of the driver who passed them

“We were getting about 100 of those per school year,” McDowell said. “We estimate that the actual stop arm violations are probably ten times that.”

The cameras that have been installed on several buses can do much more.

“The camera starts recording as soon as those top lights start flashing," McDowell said. "So before the arm even starts to come out, the video starts recording. t's HD video, you can record the make and model of the car, the license plate number.”

Each system costs around $4,000 per bus, which is part of the reason it might be several years before every bus is equipped.

“Safety is number one, and we have to look out for the kids,” McDowell said.

Once a bus driver sees someone pass them illegally, all they have to do is write down a time and tell the district. The rest is up to them.

“We are turning this information over to the county attorney's office for prosecution,” McDowell said.

But ultimately, the goal is to keep accidents from happening.

“It’s not a matter of if a child gets hit, it's when,” McDowell said. “We don't want people to get in trouble. We don't want people to get prosecuted. We want people to stop doing it.”

The school system is hopeful to have all buses equipped in several years.
