Hoover chosen by GOP colleagues to be next House speaker

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Longtime state Rep. Jeff Hoover has been selected by his Republican colleagues to become Kentucky's first GOP House speaker in nearly a century when lawmakers convene in January.

He has been minority leader for 16 years. Now Jeff Hoover, an attorney from Jamestown, is the next Speaker of the Kentucky House.

"They've just given me the highest honor of my life," Hoover.

In accepting the job, Hoover promised a new atmosphere in the House chamber after he becomes the first Republican speaker since the 1920s.

"I want to change the tone somewhat," Hoover said. "I would like to think that during the 16 years I've been floor leader, I have worked across the aisle.

Hoover was chosen during a 2-hour closed door meeting of the new majority, which includes former Metro Council member Ken Fleming.

"I'm going to approach things the same way I've always approached when I was on Metro Council, making sure we have a good, strong relationship, try to find some common ground and move Kentucky forward," Fleming said.

Also in the new majority: Dan Johnson elected from Bullitt County even after WDRB revealed his controversial Facebook posts. Johnson said he didn't have time to comment today for this story.

Hoover says he looks forward to working with Republican Gov. Matt Bevin and the GOP-led Senate to make decisions to move Kentucky in a new and better direction.

"It's not a time to be frightful, it's not a time to be arrogant, because we have to govern," Hoover said. "And there are tremendous challenges facing us in this state."

Hoover will officially be elected Speaker on the first day of the session in January.
