Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital unveils new $9 million ER renovation

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A $9 million renovation and expansion could save lives at one of Louisville's busiest hospitals.

The expansion was unveiled on Friday morning at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in south Louisville.

There are two significant changes for patients: the emergency room has doubled in size, and wait times will decrease from 40 to 30 minutes.

Ann Goodman, who was at the hospital with her son Friday, is a lifelong south Louisville resident. She wasn't thrilled about spending her Friday in the emergency room.

"I've been coming to this hospital for a number of years," she said.

But Goodman said living less than a mile away from Sts. Mary & Elizabeth has been a lifesaver.

"If this was not here, I would have to go all the way downtown," she said.

Goodman and people in south Louisville now have better access to their neighborhood hospital.

"Our city welcomes this lifesaving project and thanks all," Mayor Greg Fischer said.

On Friday, Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital unveiled the renovated emergency department, which president Jennifer Nolan said has more than doubled in size.

The expansion also includes a pediatric room for children.

"They can come in and feel a little more like home," Nolan said. 'It's kid-friendly and not as intimidating as a traditional emergency department."

"I've used this hospital. I've had surgeries here," said Metro Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch, who represents part of south Louisville and says her constituents are excited about the upgrades.

"The people here like the closeness, the free parking ... it's right here in the neighborhood," Welch said. "It is easy to get to."

If Goodman has to be in a hospital, it helps to start in an ER with lifesaving upgrades.

"No one wants to go to a hospital," she said, "If I have to be here, this is my choice, right here in this hospital."

The emergency room officially started seeing patients in the new renovated section on Friday afternoon.
