Fox dashes and dishes Kentucky to 87-64 season-opening win over Stephen F. Austin

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) — The University of Kentucky’s regular-season opener against Stephen F. Austin featured 53 fouls, so finding a rhythm was difficult.

Finding a speed, however, was easy. UK freshman point guard De’Aaron Fox, just as he has done all preseason in practice and in two exhibitions, played the game in fast-forward. Everyone else was at regular, human speed.

In his first college game, Fox handed out more assists than any UK player in his Wildcat debut, at least since assists were kept as an official stat in 1971. He finished the game with 12 assists to go with 12 points as No. 2-ranked Kentucky wore down SFA 98-64 in Rupp Arena.

Fox’s big flurry came to open the second half, when he dashed and dished for four quick assists to give push a 16-point halftime lead out to 24, and the Wildcats cruised the rest of the way, though they didn’t push the margin out of the twenties until the final minute.

Not all of the UK freshmen had such an auspicious start. Bam Adebayo, the Wildcats’ much-heralded freshman center, picked up two fouls in the game’s first 44 seconds, then spent the rest of the first-half on the bench. He wound up with five points and just one rebound in 15 minutes played.

Wenyen Gabriel scored 10 first-half points. After a scoreless first half, Monk heated up in the second to finish with 10 points.

It was a familiar face, Derek Willis, who got things going early for the Wildcats, scoring 10 of Kentucky’s first 14 points as they charged out to an early lead. He finished with 15

And another one, guard Isaiah Briscoe, was outstanding throughout. He was assertive offensively at the right times, played solid defense, and finished with 17 points.

Kentucky forced 28 turnovers and held a 32-14 edge in points off turnovers.
