With colder weather around the corner, WDRB Weather team forecasts the winter

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Fall is moving out, and the colder weather could be here as soon as this weekend.

But if you want to know about our local upcoming winter, look no further than a country several thousand miles away. Conditions in Siberia could have a say into what happens outside over the next four to five months.

"There is a large area of snowpack in Siberia, which equates to a large area of cold air," said WDRB Chief Meteorologist Marc Weinberg.

So the question becomes, what does that mean to us?

"The cold air can actually come over from Siberia, across the North Pole into our part of the world," Weinberg said.

Our own Marc Weinberg broke down all the information, as the 2016-2017 WDRB Winter Outlook was posted on our weather blog this week.

"We call that cross-polar flow, and it looks like the second half of the winter, that is something we are going to watch for," Weinberg said.

Moisture looks to be the talk in the months ahead, with the focus, according to our weather team, on January and February. But what it really comes down to is how that moisture comes down on our area.

"We are really close on the Ohio River a lot of times between rain and snow, so I will say average snow fall, but we do like the potential this winter," Weinberg said.
