LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The last time I covered a University of Louisville football game in Houston the announced crowd was 3,006.

That was Nov. 18, 2000.

That was also an exaggeration.

I was there to watch John L. Smith, Dave Ragone and the Cardinals defeat Houston, 32-13.

I believe the crowd was closer to 500 — until halftime. Then the Cougars’ athletic department gave away a truck during a promotion in a chilling rain. After the truck disappeared, so did the remaining fans.

The final 30 minutes were played in front of about 100 people.

That will not be the situation Thursday at 8 p.m. when Louisville visits Houston. The Cougars have moved to a new and improved stadium (TDECU, which seats 40,914) which I hope does not have a press box roof that leaks. It's hard for me to believe this is the same program.

Houston defeated Louisville, 34-31, last season in a game when U of L quarterback Lamar Jackson threw two interceptions and the Cardinals also lost two fumbles. Houston out-gained U of L, 462-395. UH quarterback Greg Ward ran for 98 yards and passed for 236 and three touchdowns.

U of L coach Bobby Petrino answered questions about the Cougars on Monday.

Here are three takeaways from the press conference:

Will the 2015 game have impact on the rematch?

Petrino: “I’m not sure. We’re a much different team than we were last year. Right then we were trying to find out who we are and what we were doing. Everything was new to Lamar (Jackson) when he was out there.

“He made some really good plays in the game. He made some mistakes, understanding the difference between high school football and college football. I don’t think last year’s game will play into this game at all.”

What was Petrino’s reaction to losses by Michigan, Clemson and Washington, which resulted to Louisville’s jump to third in the AP and USA Today coaches’ polls?

Petrino: “We just had full steam ahead for this game. It’s a real short turnaround to play 7 o’clock on a Saturday night and then again on Thursday.

“That’s a short turnaround for our players and our coaches. It required us to do some work last week on Houston.

“Usually on Friday I let our coaches take their kids to school and then come in here later on Friday morning. This week we were in the office at 7 a.m. working on Houston.

“Usually they get to spend some time on Saturday morning. We were up at 7 o’clock Saturday morning working on Houston. It’s a short turnaround. We had to adjust schedules and probably don’t know a whole lot about what’s going on in the world besides getting ready for the Houston game.”

What’s the importance of playing a nationally televised midweek game against an 8-2 opponent?

Petrino: “I think for our players, they just have to understand they need to go out and play well. Play the type of football we’re capable of playing.

“Really, that’s what we need to do our last two games. Whatever happens, happens. We can’t control any of that. We’ve just got to go play the way we’re capable of playing. Obviously we know it’s on national TV. Nobody else is playing. Everybody else will be watching it.

“But those are the type of games we like, something that’s fun as a team. something we feel has always helped us in recruiting.

“We are used to playing midweek games.”
