Mother who witnessed boyfriend and son's murder talks about tragedy inside their house

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A father and son were shot and killed Sept. 16 inside their Pleasure Ridge Park home, and there are still no suspects.

Billie Young is speaking out for the first time, hoping the killer is found. Her boyfriend, 51-year-old Tom Holmes, and their son, 20-year-old Thomas Holmes, were killed at their home in PRP.

Young says the suspect came through the front door. She says it may have been unlocked. Then the suspect came to the hallway, and after her son was shot, her door swung open.

She says her son was still alive at that point. Her boyfriend was sleeping in bed and was shot and killed.

"When the guy was shooting into the room, my son came out ... hollered 'Mom!', and that distracted him," Young said. "I dropped down, and he fired point black into my son, and he took off."

The coroner says the father and son died after being shot several times. Young says they were well-known painters in the community and didn't have enemies.

When asked why the shooter spared her life, Young says, "I don't think he meant to. He was sweeping the room.

"If it hadn't been for my son hollering 'Mom!', I think I would be dead too. The only the reason I'm here is because of my son. He saved my life."

Police say it was reported as a home invasion, but they don't know why the house was targeted. Nothing was stolen.

"I didn't see anything, except I know it was a male," Young said.."

Young is hoping someone comes forward with information. She still wears a sweatshirt and a ring with their names on it.

"My life is pretty much never gonna be the same," she said. "I lost the man I was with for 23 years, the father of my two children and my baby boy. and I don't know why."

Young wonders if the suspect was after the people who had lived in the house before.
