LMPD reminds people running cars to warm them up increases likelihoods of break-ins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD is trying to cut down on people leaving their cars running and unlocked before cold temperatures get here.

Detectives say more and more people leave their cars running to warm them up in the winter. As result, there is usually an increase in both thefts from cars and thefts of cars themselves.

Idling an unoccupied car is actually illegal in Louisville, but it's rarely enforced, and LMPD says writing tickets is not the goal.

"It's not to go out and give everybody tickets that cost everybody in the pocket," LMPD spokesperson Lamont Washington said. "The purpose is there are so many ordinances, that if you're not police or don't work for government, you don't know about them."

Detectives say most car break-ins are from people who do not lock their doors.
