Famous Marilyn Monroe dress expected to sell for more than $3 million at auction

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An iconic dress worn by Marilyn Monroe is up for auction.

It's the dress the Hollywood sex symbol wore when she sang "Happy Birthday, Mister President" to John F. Kennedy.

The skin-colored garment has 2,500 hand stitched crystals and is expected to sell for more than $3 million.

"The dress is so much more than just an item of clothing," said Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's Auctions. "It's historical. It's political. It's a work of art. It's Hollywood. It's Marilyn Monroe. It's the Kennedy's. It's everything wrapped up into one piece of fabric gauze."

Other items up for bid through Julien's Auction House include her personal clothing, home furnishings and handbags.

The three-day auction begins Thursday.
